Creatively and Colourfully Talking Up Style

C.A.C.T.U.S is my blog; sharing my journey into starting a new business and an interior design course. After 20years working in health care as a Paediatric Nurse and exploring my creative side to relax, I have decided to make a career change and turn my artistic passion into a business. Turning my Pinterest addiction to “work for good” and sharing my love for art, interiors, design, fashion and accessories, Little Cactus was born. I love finding unique and creative ways to style a space and don’t believe you have to spend a fortune to do it. DIY and recycling or repurposing often overlooked pieces are such easy ways of styling a space that is unique to you and affordable too. So hopefully passing on what I’ll learn along my journey will be fun and informative. Along with tips and advice, projects and reviews, interviews and how to or not to, I hope to inspire you to follow your own dreams and passions and create beautiful spaces for your life. Let the adventure begin….

Some may say I have saved the best till last, especially if you love exploring beautiful retail stores like me, but I think this final review of my Hobart trip just adds to the overall experience that a trip to this gorgeous city can offer.  I hope it has encouraged you to make the journey. Combing two of my loves walking and shopping my guide to some of the best...

Hobart and Home Again: Markets
Hobart and Home Again: Markets

After a wonderful fortnight holiday traveling around the gorgeous Tasmanian national parks I thought I'd revisit and repost my blog articles from 2015 and my time in Hobart. There is no escaping the unique qualities of a small city like Hobart.  It has a very colloquial feel with its friendly local gatherings and community events which we as tourists are openly invited to; its weekly markets to just name a few....

Powerhouse
Powerhouse

So you've taken up my recommendation of visiting Geelong's vintage finds then while you're over on the Bellarine Peninsula you must also drop into the Geelong Powerhouse. This is a converted dilapidated defunct power station in North Geelong that is now a vibrant arts precinct. Alive with colour and vitality with art that is stencilled, sprayed or brushed on its six-storey high walls.   Walls with gaping holes, broken windows and glass,...

Aladdin's Cave
Aladdin's Cave

I didn’t realise until I started researching suppliers for Little Cactus that the Bellarine Peninsula has an affinity for vintage shops.  Last years summer holiday left me with time to explore and a quick search turned into a treasure map of places to visit. First stop the Geelong Vintage Market.  This 3500 sqm warehouse is filled with industrial items, bric-a-brac, rustic and historical pieces, distinctively unique vintage, retro and Indie clothing...

Once Was Lost
Once Was Lost

So who are Once Was Lost and where did the name come from? My husband Andy and I started Once Was Lost in late 2013. We launched Once Was Lost to primarily support and create sustainability for artisans in developing countries that I saw were producing incredibly beautiful product, but without an aesthetic that I knew would be marketable here in Australia.  So, I started designing pieces and working with...

MONOCHROME SPACE
50 Shades of Grey - Monochrome Styling

As much as I love colour and all its variations and hues, I am equally obsessed with the styling created from simple black & white. Monochrome design is nothing new but it made a resurgence in 2014 and is huge in styling this year.  I believe the right combinations of materials and textures can make 50 shades of grey just as sexy and appealing in your interior design or fashion...

From Guest to Buyers Associate
From Guest to Buyers Associate

When I was asked by my sister to come along with her to an all-expense paid trip to Sydney for three days of a trade fair shopping for products to stock “Little Cactus”, of course I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Beside the fact that I would get to spend time with my sister and shop all day, it would be 3 days of no washing, cleaning and cooking for...

Top 10 Cactus Advise for Interior Design
Top 10 Cactus Advise for Interior Design

1: Get plenty of Sunshine Lighting is an essential design element in any interior space.  Natural and artificial light both can be manipulated to help you achieve the feel and look of your design, as well as providing essential requirements for tasks, safety and security.  Light can create the illusion of colour, movement, pattern, highlights and shadows. It not only is an essential element but a decorative component in design...

Yen Yen Lo
Yen Yen Lo

I love it when you come across a new artist or discover beautiful design pieces un-expectantly.  It’s almost like un-wrapping a gift and enjoying the surprise of finding out what’s inside. Meeting Yen at the QV Market in Melbourne earlier this year with her gorgeous fine ceramic pieces was just like that.  Sitting quite unassumingly beside her table of charming unique bell chimes she shared with me the stories behind...

Study Mode 3: Adding Warmth
Study Mode 3: Adding Warmth

I have chosen this living room as an example of a cool space that I believe can be made warm and more intimate without drastic changes. The concrete floors, monochrome colour palette with vast white wall surfaces, minimal furniture, and crisp clean lines in the glass doors, low box table and the smooth surface in the furniture pieces really create a cool living space. The light is quite bright, ceiling...
